Dual Energy CT

Dual Energy CT Scan

With the introduction of Dual Energy CT scans, our Corrimal site now offers a revolutionary service that takes standard CT scans to the next level. Dual Energy CT combines the convenience and accuracy of a standard CT scan with the added benefit of being able to provide more detailed information about structures in the body. Let’s take a closer look at what this technology can do for you.

What is Dual Energy CT?

Dual Energy uses two separate X-ray energies to create images from two different perspectives. When combined, these two images produce detailed information about each structure in the body that is being scanned, allowing physicians to accurately diagnose conditions such as gout or detect IV contrast material during an IV contrast scan. In addition, it also allows physicians to differentiate between benign and malignant tumors more easily.

What Is A Dual Energy CT Scan Used For?

The additional level of detail provided by Dual Energy CT can be put to good use in various medical scenarios. Its most common uses include scanning for gout, kidney stones, and IV contrast scans. In each case, the greater level of detail makes it easier to diagnose the problem accurately and start treatment quickly. Additionally, the fact that the preparation process is the same as with normal CT scans makes it very convenient for patients who may need multiple scans over time.

This can be useful for the following tests:

Gout occurs when there are increased levels of uric acid in your body, which can form painful crystals in your joints. Dual energy CT can clearly detect gout so you can get the correct treatment right away.

Kidney Stones

Kidney stones can be made up of different minerals, and this can change the way they are treated and your follow-up management. Using dual energy CT, we can not only detect if you have a kidney stone, but determine what it is made of so you can get the right treatment and management.

IV Contrast scans

Dual energy CT can improve the appearance of scans that use IV contrast to visualise blood vessels and organs, making your diagnosis more accurate. It can also be used to reduce the number of scans we need to take, therefore reducing your radiation dose.

Overall, Dual Energy CT provides all the benefits of a standard CT scan but with added precision and detail. By offering this revolutionary technology at our Corrimal site, we are able to give our patients access to an imaging technique that could potentially help them receive an accurate diagnosis faster than ever before.
