Do I need to make an appointment for my scan?
You do not need an appointment for an X-ray or Dental OPG – simply attend one of our practices with your referral and we will fit you in.
For all other scans – CT, Ultrasound, MRI, Mammography and Injections – you will need to make an appointment prior.
What preparation is required for my scan?
Preparation can vary depending on the type of scan and the body part being scanned.
- For CT and MRI that require IV Contrast: keep well hydrated and do not eat 2 hours before the scan.
- For Ultrasounds of the abdomen and pelvis: you may need to fast or have a full bladder.
- Some injections may require you to stop taking blood thinning medications.
The receptionist will inform you of the preparation at the time of booking.
How long does my scan take?
This depends on the type of scan:
- X-ray or OPG: 5–10 minutes
- Ultrasound, Mammography, CT: 15–20 minutes
- MRI: 20–60 minutes
Is my scan painful?
Diagnostic scans are generally painless.
- CT or MRI with IV Contrast will require a small needle, similar to a blood test.
- Ultrasound may cause some pressure from the probe.
- Injections or biopsies may cause discomfort or pain, but local anaesthetic is used for most of these.
Should I be concerned about radiation from my scan?
The radiation levels used in diagnostic scans are very small and considered safe for occasional use.
- CT scans use slightly more radiation than X-ray and Mammography, but all are within safe limits.
- If you are pregnant or think you may be, inform a staff member before your scan.
How long will my scan results take?
Results typically take 24–48 hours and will be sent electronically to your referrer.
You can also collect your images and results from the practice after this time if needed.
Is there any charge?
Yes, generally our services are not covered by Medicare and there will be charges applicable.
